Salman Khan back in action from September 9

Actor Salman Khan will be back in action within two weeks after undergoing a gamma ray procedure in the US for his rare twin neurological problems.

He underwent a seven-hour-long procedure in a hospital in Pennsylvania on August 31, mainly due to his complicated problem, said sources close to the actor. The actor is scheduled to fly to Dublin to start shooting for Ek Tha Tiger, on September 9.

A source close to the actor said, ``Salman will start shooting of the film on September 9 itself and Katrina Kaif will begin the next day.'' As Ek Tha Tiger is an action-oriented one, Salman's family wants him to rest. ``But the procedure he underwent doesn't require a long recuperation time,'' the source said.

Recently, Salman had made it public that he had twin health problems. Firstly, he had developed a cerebral arteriovenous malformation or AVM in which an abnormal connection develops between the veins and arteries. Secondly, the AVM had caused a rare side-effect in his case called trigeminal neuralgia, which is a painful condition caused by compression of a cranial nerve. Salman had told TOI before flying to the US that he was in a great deal of pain due to the condition; trigeminal neuralgia's episodic pain can be triggered off by chewing food.

The seven-hour-long procedure, however, caught the actor's family unawares. A family source said, ``We were first told that it will be of four hours but there is a slight complication that needed more time.'' Both the problems were tackled in the same procedure, the sources said.

Salman will stay in hospital for five days. ``The doctors will examine him on September 5 and if all is well he will be discharged from the hospital on September 7 and join the Dublin unit on September 9,'' said the sources.
The actor's brother in law Atul Agnihotri told TOI, ``Salman is fine and on the way to recovery. He is, in fact, defying post-operation instructions given by the doctors.'' Agnihotri said that Salman's check-up after three months would reveal whether he needs a second procedure.

Agnihotri added, `` Salman spoke to his parents as they were concerned about him.'' The actor's latest film has broken the opening day collection grossing about Rs 20 crore. ``Salman cannot believe that the film has become such a big hit. I guess it is because he is not here to experience it.''

Expert speak:
Neurosurgeon Dr B K Mishra from Hinduja Hospital, which is the only hospital to have a gamma knife in western India, said that the radiosurgical procedure was best suited for Salman Khan's twin problems. ``While a gamma knife would not be the first choice for a patient with trigeminal neuralgia, the fact that he had an AVM means that gamma knife would be the best non-invasive procedure.
The Gamma knife is not a knife at all, but a contraption that gives out high-energy radiation from a gamma ray source. It is highly precise and can target abnormal blood vessel or tumour without affecting the surrounding tissues. Incidentally, the Hinduja Hospital's Gmma Knife was the first of its kind in South-east Asia when it was commissioned 15 years back. The hospital has performed over 1,500 procedures in the interim, with a special focus on AVM and trigeminal neuralgia
